Bridgehampton, NY – September 3, 2023 – Sophie Gochman of Palm Beach, FL, made her last day at the 2023 Hampton Classic a winning one, successfully competing with several horses in the $25,000 Agneta & Brownlee Currey High Junior/Amateur Jumper Classic and the $10,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Hunter Classic. She also earned the High Amateur Jumper Championship for her performances in the division throughout the week.
One of the world’s most prestigious horse shows, the annual Hampton Classic features competitors at every level from young children in leadline to Olympic, World, and World Cup Champions. The Classic also has competitions for riders with disabilities.

To wrap up her busy morning, Gochman rode SMG Sport Horse LLC’s Tage BH and Gabbie BH to a 1-3 finish (respectively) in the $25,000 Agneta & Brownlee Currey High Junior/Amateur Jumper Classic, which saw a field of 45 starters tackle a 15-effort, 1.40m course designed by Alan Wade. Seventeen entries made it to the jump-off, where Tage BH posted the fastest double-clear in 33.592 seconds. Gabbie BH was not far behind with a time of 34.100 seconds.
“I was really deep to Fence #2,” Gochman said of her round with Tage BH. “I streamed down that first line to get six strides, landed, and thought, ‘This is the fastest I’ve ever gone.’ Especially at this height! I think our turn back to the Hermès oxer was what got me the win. It was amazing, and I’m so happy.”

Gochman and Tage BH secured the Currey Cup Perpetual Trophy as the winners of the Jumper Classic, as well as the overall High Amateur Jumper Championship. Riding to a second-place finish between Gochman’s mounts was Isabel Coxe of West Lake Hills, TX, aboard 5 Roosters’ Fuego, tripping the timers in 33.729 seconds. Coxe and Fuego also earned the High Amateur Jumper Reserve Championship for their efforts in the division.
In the Aspinall Hunter Ring, Gochman piloted her own Colter to victory in the $10,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Hunter Classic with a combined score of 183 points. The pair led the way through the first-round course on 95 points, one of only three scores at or above 90 from the field of 43 horses.

Second-place honors stayed within the Gochman family as Becky Gochman of Wellington, FL, rode Gochman Sport Horse LLC’s Catch Me to a total score of 178 points. Chris Brown of Boynton Beach, FL, finished third with 176.35 points aboard his own Newport.
At the opinion of the judges, Taylor Cawley of Wellington, FL, earned the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Style of Riding Award as the Best Junior Jumper Rider of the week. “It’s a big honor, being picked from all of the juniors in the jumpers at this show,” she said. “It really means a lot.”

In the hunter rings, Ariana Marnell of Las Vegas, NV, and Marnell Sport Horses’ Babylon claimed the Grand Hunter Championship after their performances in the Combined Small Junior Hunter 3’6” division earned the most points of any hunter division throughout the week. Marnell also brought home the Kathy Scholl Perpetual Trophy as the Best Junior Rider on a Horse. Named the Best Junior Rider on a Pony, Grace Steinbeck-Werner of New York, NY, earned the Horse Haven Trophy.
After his successful performances in multiple divisions and a full podium sweep of Thursday’s $25,000 Hunter Classic Sponsored by Green River Farm, Nick Haness of Temecula, CA, walked away with the Leading Hunter Rider Award and Charlie Weaver Perpetual Trophy. Cody Rego of Devonshire, Bermuda, added the Leading Junior Equitation Rider Award and Gordon Wright Trophy to his victory in Saturday’s $10,000 Hermès Equitation Championship.
To celebrate the Hampton Classic’s final day, many VIPs decorated their tables to match the beauty and uniqueness of the rings they overlooked while outdoing each other in the Hampton Cottages & Gardens Table Décor Awards. The Neuwirth table took blue-ribbon honors for the best-decorated table, with the teams at Hermès and Compass earning second and third for their work, respectively. Special categories included Most Innovative, won by The Agency; Best Overall Theme, won by the team at Asprey; and Best Floral Design, won by Lilee Fell Flowers.
