Hi! How are you?!
It has been a remarkable summer here in the Pacific Northwest and as it mellows to Fall I am feeling very excited, it feels like a new energy is flowing into my work. I experience my life and work in cycles and this fresh new energy feels like a new beginning and a chance to change perspective and flow with a new energy and enthusiasm for work and life.
This feeling has been building in me for a few weeks now and it landed last week when I was with my sister Becky, whom some of you know. Her and her Lippizzan mare, Mira, have had 9 months off to deal with and heal a metabolic condition and related laminitis problems.
Mira miraculously and unexpectedly came sound and I asked to be present at their first ride in nine months. It was a new start for Becky and her horse, a chance to take everything she had been practicing on the ground both physically and mentally/emotionally into the saddle. Becky thought at one point she may never ride her horse again, so to be able to get on and ride meant Becky found herself, for the first time in a long teaching/training/riding career, in a state of no expectations of how it should be, how her horse should look and with no desire to be in control of the experience.
For my part I just wanted to be there to support her as her brother not her teacher but that didn't last long and within minutes I found myself asking her to slow and increase the movement in her seat, the belly button turning and to let the horse start the cycle then she could match and lead the movement. I was aware of the absolute clear connection the two of them had with no pressure, no agenda other than to experience being together in the saddle like they had not been for 9 months. The connection was incredible to watch and there were tears of joy all round.
Connecting with your horse first, with no other agenda in the moment, physically, is the doorway to all other connection in the saddle and is available immediately with no prior training using the simple techniques I present with Ride From Within. My sister just walked through a door, a point of no return, into a world where the quality of her internal connection with her beloved mare is more important to her than how her horse looks on the outside or what she thinks her mare should be learning that day. These are the first steps on a journey Ride From Within can take you on that will ultimately take you beyond what you thought you could achieve with your horse, regardless of age, conformation, discipline or previous training.
I see almost imperceptible things other people often miss and that is part of my gift. But when I can, I like to share what I see. Here is a short little gem of a video of my friend and student Lynne Riddell and her horse Landstar. Lynne is a highly accomplished rider and this was filmed to demonstrate what happens in the horse when we make small changes in our bodies.....and you get a peek at what I see....I get so fired up and excited watching this video!
Lightening the Forehand using the Thoracic Spine (not the reins!)
As I see it, the horse makes these huge shifts in how it carries its own energy through its body forward. At around 00:56 you can see the horse lift itself up through the withers.
This happens because Lynne increases the curve in the lower half of her thoracic spine which in turn increase the curve (or lift) in the horse thoracic spine sending the energy forward in a higher arc through the withers to the base of the neck. In that moment the energy goes up and the upward energy actually slows the walk. He then gets to (or has to) balance himself in this new alignment.
Many thanks to Lynne and Landstar for being such good sports to clearly demonstrate the old way and the new way of "getting the horse off the fore".
I would encourage you to look at this video many time so that you may take in all that is happening in the horse as the rider makes these small almost imperceptible changes in her bones to direct the horse's energy traveling through her.
